Wedding in Islam – A Lesson in Understanding

A wedding in Islam is considered to be based on love and mercy and is a family relationship between a Muslim woman and a man. It should be based on compassion, perfection and understanding. This relationship needs to stay focused on their Islam beliefs and the obligations that one has towards the other. Allah will give peace and calmness to the relationship if this is followed.

The wedding in Islam is celebrated for five days. In a typical wedding in Islam there are pre-wedding rituals that are followed. First there is the Legan Chir which is a gift of cash that is sent from the groom's father to the bride's father. The second is called a Majha Ceremony where the Muslim bride sites on a small table that is square and turmeric is anointed on her body. The Muslim groom’s family provides this turmeric. The next ritual that takes place before the actual wedding itself is called the Mehndi Ceremony. This occurs the night before the wedding in Islam and the Muslim bride’s relatives that are females put turmeric paste on her in order to make her complexion glow.

The actual wedding in Islam has its own set of rituals that are followed. The groom arrives with friends and relatives at the wedding. The Muslim ceremony is ready to begin on this fourth day. It can take place at a location in the community or at the bride or groom's place of residence. There are parts that are selected from The Quran to be read by the Maulvi and then a proposal is made. If this proposal is accepted then the wedding is performed. After this a sermon is delivered by the Qazi about the duties and the rights of each spouse. The Muslim groom then receives blessings from the older women, and dinner is begun where the men and women eat separately. This is followed by a prayer reading by the newlywed Muslim couple. A copy of the Quran is placed between them and they can view each other through mirrors only. The Muslim bride is then allowed to go to her husband's home. The groom's mother holds the Quran over her head as the Muslim bride enters the home. This is a typical wedding in Islam. However there can be variations depending on the location of the Muslim couple, and family tradition.
